How to use the Merge Excel Files tool
- Choose two or more .xlsx, .csv or .tsv files and put them in the order you want with the arrows.
- Pick Stack rows into one sheet or Keep each file as its own sheet.
- When stacking, say whether every sheet starts with a header row and whether to add a Source file column.
- Choose Excel or CSV output, press Merge and download the result.
Worked example: two months of orders
jan.csv has a header row and 40 orders. feb.xlsx has the same 4 columns, its own header row and 35 orders. Choose Stack rows into one sheet, keep the header option ticked and tick Add a Source file column.
- The result reads Merged: 76 rows in 1 sheet: one header row plus 40 + 35 = 75 orders.
- The sheet has 5 columns: Source file, then the original 4.
- Rows from January show jan.csv in the first column and rows from February show feb.xlsx.
With Keep each file as its own sheet, merged.xlsx would instead hold 2 sheets named jan and feb.
Stack rows or separate sheets?
Stack rows when the files hold the same kind of data, such as one export per month, and you want to sort, filter or pivot it all at once. The header row of the first sheet is kept and the header rows of the others are dropped, so check that every file has the same columns in the same order; the tool matches columns by position, not by name. Keep separate sheets when the files differ, or when you just want one workbook to send instead of many attachments. Sheet names are taken from the file names and shortened to Excel’s 31 character limit, with a number added if two would clash.
What is kept
Cell values are kept, including numbers, text and true or false values. Formulas arrive as their last calculated results, and formatting, charts and macros are not copied. Empty rows at the end of each sheet are dropped before stacking, so blank lines do not pile up in the middle of the merged sheet. CSV output is possible only when everything ends up in one sheet, because a CSV file holds a single table.
Your files stay on your device
All files are read and combined in a background worker inside your browser. The merged workbook is built in memory on your device and offered as a download. None of the spreadsheets is uploaded, so branch figures and customer data stay with you.
Frequently asked questions
Do the files need the same columns?
For stacking, yes. Rows are placed by column position, so put the columns in the same order in every file first.
What happens to multiple header rows?
With the header option ticked, only the header row of the first file is kept and the others are skipped.
Can I merge CSV and Excel files together?
Yes. .xlsx, .csv and .tsv files can be mixed in one merge.
Can I tell which file a row came from?
Yes. Tick Add a Source file column and every row gets the name of its file in a new first column.
Why can I not save the result as CSV?
CSV holds one table. Choose Stack rows into one sheet, or download as Excel when you keep separate sheets.
