Split a PDF into separate files

Break a long PDF into smaller documents by page range, by a fixed number of pages, or into single pages. Get every part as its own file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Private by design: your file never leaves your device. This tool runs 100% in your browser, with no uploads.

How to use the Split PDF tool

  1. Choose the PDF you want to split. The page count appears as soon as the file has been read.
  2. Pick a mode: by ranges (for example 1-3, 4-9, 10-), every N pages, or every page separately.
  3. For ranges, separate each part with a comma. Every comma-separated range becomes its own PDF, and 10- means page 10 to the end.
  4. Press Split PDF, then download the parts one by one or use Download all as ZIP.

Worked example: a 10-page scanned bundle

A scanner produced one file, bundle.pdf, with 10 pages: a 3-page contract, a 6-page appendix and a 1-page receipt. Choose By ranges and type 1-3, 4-9, 10-. You get three files:

  • bundle_pages-1-3.pdf with 3 pages
  • bundle_pages-4-9.pdf with 6 pages
  • bundle_page-10.pdf with 1 page

With Every N pages set to 4 instead, the same file becomes three parts of 4, 4 and 2 pages. Every page separately gives 10 one-page files, which you can download together as a single ZIP.

Choosing the right split mode

By ranges suits documents with known sections, such as splitting a scanned bundle into a contract, an invoice and an appendix. Write the ranges in the order you want the files numbered. Every N pages is for regular chunks, for example cutting a 40-page packet into ten 4-page handouts; the last file simply holds whatever is left. Every page separately creates one PDF per page, which is useful for sending individual pages or feeding them into another process.

File names and what is preserved

Output files are named after the original plus the pages they contain, for example report_pages-1-3.pdf, so they sort sensibly in a folder. Page content, size and orientation are copied unchanged. As with any page-copying tool, document-level extras such as bookmarks and form fields are not carried into the parts. To keep only some pages in a single file instead of several, use the Extract Pages tool.

Your files stay on your device

Your PDF is opened and cut apart by code running in your own browser, using a background worker so large documents stay responsive. The parts are created in memory on your device and handed to you as downloads. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why this tool is safe for contracts and statements.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split off just a few pages?

Use the ranges mode with one range, for example 5-8. You will get one PDF containing only those pages. The Extract Pages tool does the same with thumbnails to click.

Can I split a PDF by file size?

Not directly. Choose a page count that gives parts of roughly the size you need, since file size depends on the pages. Every N pages is the nearest equivalent.

Why did I get a ZIP?

When a split creates more than one file you can download each one or all together. The ZIP is built in your browser and is only a convenience.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, without re-rendering or recompression, so text stays selectable and images keep their quality.

What happens with an out-of-range page number?

You will see a message naming the page and the document length, and nothing is created until the ranges are valid.
